Niwot is a small, unincorporated Boulder County community on Highway 119, roughly halfway between Boulder and Longmont. It is known for its historic Second Avenue downtown, quiet tree-lined neighborhoods, larger lots and some of the most sought-after estate properties in the area.
Niwot counted 4,306 residents in the 2020 Census. Because it is unincorporated, Boulder County provides local government services rather than a town government.

Niwot was platted in 1875 on both sides of the Colorado Central Railroad, two years after the line reached northeast from Boulder, giving local farmers access to markets in Denver and Wyoming. The town takes its name from Chief Niwot, an Arapaho leader whose name means "Left Hand." After 1900 the business district moved to Second Avenue, where the first commercial building went up in 1905. Boulder County designated the area the Niwot Historic District in 1993, and today its two blocks hold independent shops, restaurants and the Left Hand Grange.
Niwot is served by St. Vrain Valley Schools. Schools in town include:

Highway 119 (the Diagonal) puts Boulder and Longmont each within a short drive, with easy connections to Highway 52 and the rest of Boulder County. Second Avenue keeps coffee, dining and local shopping within walking distance for many residents.
