Settled in 1867 and incorporated on November 16, 1874, Erie was named for Erie, Pennsylvania, the former home of early settler Richard Van Valkenburg. Coal was found in the area in the mid-1860s, and the first official underground mine opened in 1876. Unlike many mining camps, Erie's miners owned their own land and houses, which helped the town put down lasting roots. Most local mines closed by 1960, and the last, the Eagle Mine, closed in 1978. Erie celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024.
Erie maintains about 82 miles of trails and more than 1,500 acres of open space, according to the Town.
